Well On Their Way - Bet On Them!
Championship teams have many positive attributes. And at this point in the college baseball season, there are eight teams that have dominated week after week. All eight teams have less than 10 losses on the year. The national media has proclaimed LSU and UNC as the heavy favorites (proof in this article), but rest assured, all eight are hoping to board that plane to Omaha, Nebraska in June.

The Perfect Storm ~ The 2 Paths

In a previous blog post, I mentioned that only through the process of climbing the mountain and winning the final game - a national championship - can one truly know he secrets (if you will). However, there are two paths that must be taken to expose the truth (to the secrets). The first path is the climb to the top . . .

The Perfect Storm ~ Confidence Creates Freedom
Without confidence, an athlete's freedom is masked by repetitive failure. An athlete that is properly influenced builds confidence through beliefs and preparation. This confidence empowers them and creates freedom. And with freedom, players can perform beyond levels of expectations (check out this video - the story of Adam). Freedom enables an athlete to perform without fear. IT enables an athlete to play “in-the-zone” and experience being in the moment.

The Perfect Storm ~ How a Natty Was Won
To win a National Championship a team (watch this video about the essence of TEAM) needs several things to happen. It starts with players who posses two fundamental qualities: great talent and great commitment. Then a dream needs to be transformed into a clear vision. Each and every player must buy into the vision and the plan that is created by the vision must be obtainable by the players and equivalent to their talent. Then you need a great amount of LUCK. This is just an overview, as there are many steps in between the start and the finish. In summary, it's very hard to win a National Championship and usually it's the perfect storm that delivers IT.

The Ability to Walk Away - Dumb but Smart

All of us coaches have experienced extreme highs and extreme lows. That’s what separates coaches from other so-called experts. Perspective and truth is everything! Over my coaching career and specifically during my recruiting days, I experienced both the process, and the effects, of winning and losing at the highest level. I also witnessed the consequences that both have on the student-athletes.

Who is Coach Red Grewe
After calling the final pitch, resulting in a strikeout and a grand celebration of the 2009 College World Series title, I enjoyed that brief moment at the pinnacle. After a return trip back to Baton Rouge with the team and my family, and less than 12 hours after we landed, I was on another airplane to scout the next great player – the true sacrifice a coach must make for the program: the loss of family time. Through it all I am . . .

The Moment During Athletic Development
As the future is truthfully unknown, an athlete will never be able to predict when their physical talent will reach its limit. Therefore, it becomes essential to create freedom during competition. An athlete with freedom has a foundation built on perspective. They will be able to define the moment during their athletic development.

Success vs. Failure
Don’t let success go to your head, or failures go to your heart. This powerful quote is critical for all athletes and coaches. It centers on creating a proper perspective that enables one to focus on the process and stay in the moment. Success should go to others and not your head. Failure must go to your mind and not your heart.
